LEARNING AT I-EP
English

The English language is our chosen language in the I-EP primary school. At present, over 50% of our classes are taught in English. As our school expands, we want this percentage to be even larger and larger.

Our English curriculum is based upon the Singapore English Curriculum. The Singapore English Curriculum is based upon the British National Curriculum.

The reason behind this curriculum choice is that it matches with our requirements. In Grade One, the curriculum covers the basics of the English Language. For example, It covers the alphabet, how to communicate and penmanship. The curriculum then increases in complexity with each grade, building upon the previous year.

The curriculum is divided into six main strands, which are speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary. Whilst these strands have their own learning outcomes, in practise, classes regularly use multiple strands concurrently.

In I-EP, we do not use a standardised textbook as this limits the scope of what we can teach. Our curriculum is based upon a series of conceptual learning outcomes allowing us to fully integrate the English curriculum into the programme of inquiry. This takes our English learning from being two dimensional to three dimensional. This is because our English classes cover key English points while in the context of the programme of inquiry. This extra dimensional creates a deeper understanding amongst our students.

English Support

We understand that not all students have had the same level of exposure to the English language. For our students who need that extra little help, we provide an English support program. For our younger students, this consists of an afterschool club once a week. For our older students, this consists of being taken out of mainstream English classes and given additionally support. The mission of our ES program is to get the students back into the mainstream classes as quick as possible and as soon as the student is ready.
